Managers Are Employees Too

Disengaged managers have disengaged employees.

According to Gallup’s "State of the American Manager" report, managers account for at least 70% of the variance in employee engagement scores across business units. Sadly, the percentage of engaged managers is only slightly higher than the percentage of engaged employees. Pretty scary when you consider that only 30% of today’s U.S. workforce is engaged.

Most organizations understand the importance of engaging their employees. Unfortunately, efforts often largely focus on the engagement of its workforce and what managers can do to help grow their satisfaction. But, what’s being done for the managers who are first and foremost an employee too?

Q&A

Q. What comes first – career development or employee engagement?

A. Career development is one of the top reasons why an employee stays and stays engaged. You can’t talk about employee engagement without addressing your career development programs as well. However, many employees may not want to discuss their careers with a manager where trust is not yet established. So, a strong culture of engagement, where the manager has great influence, is critical to successful career conversations.

Q. What’s the difference between a development conversation and a performance discussion?

A. Performance discussions are usually initiated by the manager, focus on past performance, and are generally evaluations of identified performance goals. Id development conversations, the focus is on career development goals focused on the future where the employee is seeking a manager’s support, not evaluation.
